#Tips: Top Millennial Mood-swinger music on a Rainy day

As the “-ber” months approaches, when the weather gets colder and gloomier day by day and it doesn’t get any better; a lot of people feel coldness, gloominess, and suffer from mood swings already. Psychologists sees this pretty common and classifies it as “Seasonal Affection Disorder (SAD)”. When people suffer from gloominess, we often resort to do the things that we’re comfortable with to help ourselves veer away from the feeling or to rub it more and be more insightful about it. Though much can be said about the activities that can be done, some are just too savvy and wise. One of which is through music, from writing to just listening; music helps us digest and feel the “vibe” our environment gives us.

And because I am guilty of doing such, I’ve decided to make a playlist of purely OPM songs that has been timeless through the years. Upon listening to these, I realized how good our composers and musicians are, how commendable their works are and why they truly deserve their spots in the Philippine entertainment industry. Here are the songs that made me think of my “hugot” in life.

1. Muli - Originally by Rodel Naval, popularized by Bugoy Drilon in 2009. This song is to those who seek second chances, with a soulful voice this song conveys a desperate and humble message, which asks for forgiveness and acceptance from the one you love.

2. Bakit pa ba? - This is an original from Jay – R Silona released on 2003. This is a song of forgiveness, after going through a breakup, when your deeds flashed back and you would never had regrets from your past relationships. This song tackles a relationship from an egoistic man’s perspective, which most of us had gone through.

3. Kung Ako na lang Sana - Friendzoned, unrequited love, and hopeless romantic, if you see yourself as one on the aforementioned, this song by Bituin Escalante is for you. This song also talks of what ifs, on a self-centered perspective. It’s one of those that’ll really make you feel sad on a rainy day. Totally relevant to millennials today.

4. Fallin - This is an original from Janno Gibbs, an official soundtrack for the Korean series “Full house”. The song tackles uncertainty in love. With Janno’s soulful voice paired with sweet and subtle instrumental music can really wake up that “romantic” side in you.

5. Hanggang Ngayon - An original from Kyla, was released in 2000. This is a perfect “rainy day song” with a soft to dramatic tune down to the husky and gentle singing voice of Kyla this song will remind you of your longings, heartbreaks and despair.

6. Ipagpatawad mo - Originally by VST & co. This is song talks of penance that humbly reasons out love in hopes of forgiveness. The song is composed of heavily lines that was delivered soulfully on the cover of Janno Gibbs in 1990; and a masculine tune that fits a deep voice.

7. Nang Dahil sa Pag – Ibig - Originally sang by Tootsie Guevara in 2000 and covered by Bugoy Drilon in 2011. This is a song of martyrdom in a relationship that was meant to be sung by a lady. Though I love both versions, Tootsie’s version shows submissiveness and devotion to love, however with her sweet way of singing didn’t focus on delivering the sadness, devotion, and compassion that the lyrics of the song implies, which was filled in the latter cover.

8. Nagmamakaawa - This is an original track from Bugoy Drilon released in 2011. This song basically shows madness and hopelessness, from being solely devoted to love to being left behind. This song fits right to Bugoy Drilon’s husky, sweet, and clean voice. The dramatic tune to it and the powerful lyrics delivered passionately . This song is sure to pluck some heartstrings.

9. Hiling - This is an original from Jay – R Siaboc of Pinoy Dream Academy (2007). This song talks about one’s aspirations and devotions to love. This is a dedication song that shows longing, loyalty, and faithfulness. With Jay-R siaboc’s baritone register singing to the contemporary blues tune of the song, this song is a remarkable “senti” song for millennials.

10. Magbalik - An original song from the band Callalily, released in 2006. Magbalik is a song of reconciliation, it talks of the confusions, and challenges we meet in a relationship. The song suggests that one should lean on his faith, when it seems too much already for both parties. Kean Cipriano’s (vocalist) gentle style of singing added with an alternative rock instrumental, this song will take you back in time and think of the journey you had with your partner.

As you can see there is a common theme to these songs: unrequited love, love in general, devotion, and hopes. As the weather gets colder, and we feel more and more cozy this playlist is sure to pull a handful of insights from you. Whether you’re going through a relationship conflict or not (just wanna reminisce on the feeling) then this playlist is for you.

Lastly, I just wanna share that these OPM songs are getting the least attention today. The bad thing is, in my generation there are very few who can appreciate OPM and prefers to patronize them over foreign music. Let’s try to pursue and support OPM, which will help not only our local artists but also our local writers and composers.
